Per molti aspetti il problema della resistenza antimicrobica assomiglia a quello del cambiamento climatico: l’uomo è vittima del suo stesso successo, la scienza è complicata ma affascinante, la politica internazionale è teatro di iniquità, c’è un forte senso di impotenza ma, cosa molto più importante, tutti possiamo e dobbiamo fare qualcosa a riguardo, a cominciare da adesso.
Oggi si dà per scontata l’efficacia dei farmaci antibatterici e antimicrobici. Forse però negli ultimi decenni ne abbiamo abusato, o ne abbiamo fatto un uso improprio, e ora assistiamo con preoccupazione crescente a un fenomeno inaspettato, al fatto cioè che i virus sono sempre più resistenti alle medicine.
Un dato riassume bene la situazione: attualmente, in Europa, i virus resistenti ai farmaci uccidono ogni anno 25.000 persone. Si tratta di una cifra impressionante, molto vicina al numero di morti per incidenti stradali.

Professor Dame Sally C. Davies is the Chief Medical Officer for England and the first woman to hold the post. As CMO she is the independent advisor to the Government on medical matters with particular interest in Public Health and Research. She developed the National Institute for Health Research in 2006. She is an Emeritus Professor at Imperial College.
