In publishing this work, Aboca Museum wishes to offer specialists and booklovers a reading of one of the most interesting and rarest volumes in the history of botany: the herbarium Hortus Eystettensisby Basilius Besler, published in three volumes in Nuremberg in 1613, and containing 367 hand-coloured copper engravings.
The Commentarium is an integral part of the herbarium, which is considered to be one of the most important of its kind in the history of European botany, thanks to the wealth of species, most of which are medicinal, contained therein, and the rich detail and wonderful colours of the image.
The Commentarium, put together by various specialists, represents an important contribution to the understanding of this unique work, and in particular of the historical and cultural context in which it was produced, and of the contents thereof from both the historical-artistic point of view, and from the botanical and biographical points of view.
